An Advanced Practice Nurse coordinates the
delivery of health services, and is supported by Health Specialists and
Assistants. Children receive health screenings within 45 days of
enrollment, and include recording height and weight, measuring blood
pressure and vision and hearing.
Efforts are made to ensure
that each family obtains a “medical home” and that
all children eligible for Medicaid or CHIP are enrolled.
Health Specialists track immunization records and schedule all follow-up
medical treatment. When all other options
have been exhausted, Head Start of Greater Dallas pays for remaining
needed services for children.
Health services also include dental exams
and care. Relationships with local dental providers help ensure that all
children receive timely and appropriate care.
In addition, HSGD participates in the
Johnson & Johnson
Healthcare Institute for Head Start. The goal of this
program is to educate and better prepare Head Start parents so that they
can properly manage the health care needs of their children by providing
them with resources and education on preventative care.
Our Early Head Start program provides free
childcare, extended social services, preventative health and prenatal
education services to the parents. If needed, we assist the teenage
parent in obtaining a medical home for herself and her child for health
care.
