Head
Start of Greater Dallas gives priority to children with disabilities. At
least 10 percent of enrollment is comprised of these children. The
agency collaborates closely with the local school districts that are
mandated to provide services to children with disabilities from ages 0
to 21.
When the school districts are unable to provide
the full level of services needed, Head Start of Greater Dallas provides
the services directly or through collaborative arrangements with other
community resources.
The Special Services/Mental Health content area is
fully staffed to ensure the delivery of specialized services to Head
Start children and families, including 3 Mental Health Professionals, 1
Special Services Coordinator, 3 Special Education Coordinators, 1
Licensed Psychologist Associate, and 16 Special Services Specialists.
Each of the Licensed Mental Health
Professionals assigned to their centers provide preventative and
intervention services to all Head Start children through play therapy.
They are also responsible for providing counseling services to parents
and facilitate classes on how to deal with anger and frustration in
healthy ways. Parent and grandparent support groups are well attended.
