HSGD > January 2008 eSpirit Newsletter > Cone Center Example of Partnership Between TI, SMU, DHA and Head Start
Dedication ceremonies for the new Margaret H. Cone Head Start and Early Head Start Center will be Tuesday, January 29 at 10 a.m. at the center, 2919 Troy St., Dallas. This center combines the Head Start and Early Head Start programs to offer early childhood development for children from birth to age 5.
This model preschool program, the result of a partnership between Texas Instruments and HSGD, demonstrates that low-income children from any environment, no matter how challenging, can attain academic success in school. The centerpiece of the program is the pre-literacy curriculum Language Enrichment and Activities Program (LEAP). Developed by Head Start partner Southern Methodist University, LEAP achieved national recognition and is now employed in Head Start and other early childhood programs in Texas and many other states.
The Margaret Cone Center is located in Frazier Courts, historically one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in Dallas but now the beneficiary of a major community revitalization effort by the Dallas Housing Authority (DHA), HSGD and other partners. The program outgrew the original center and DHA constructed a new facility across the street. It is surrounded by $60 million of new homes, town houses, apartments and neighborhood amenities.
